Stump Grinding Sunshine Coast
Below-grade grinding so the patch can be returfed, repaved or replanted — narrow machines that fit through a 760mm side gate.
A stump left in the ground after a removal slowly turns into a problem nobody planned for — surface roots that heave pavers, sucker regrowth from the trunk collar, a magnet for white ants and root-rot pathogens, and an awkward lump every time the mower goes past. Grinding it out in one visit clears the lot.
Our machines come in two sizes. The narrow-access grinder fits through a standard 760mm pool gate or hinterland side path, which is what we need for most Sunshine Coast backyards — Buderim, Sippy Downs, Twin Waters canal blocks all run that same constraint. For open paddock work on a Nambour acreage or a hinterland block off the Blackall Range, we bring the bigger grinder and chew through a hardwood fig stump in a fraction of the time.
Quoting is based on stump diameter at ground level, species and how deep you need it. A coastal melaleuca grinds fast — salt and softness work in your favour. A native fig with a buttressed root flare or a dense hinterland hardwood takes longer. Standard finish is 150–300mm below grade, deep enough to roll turf or lay pavers straight over the top.
Across Sunshine Coast we see this work most often near Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and out across the surrounding suburbs — subtropical rainforest with bunya pine, strangler fig and red cedar in Maleny. Species we handle regularly include Hoop Pine (araucaria cunninghamii) and Bunya Pine (araucaria bidwillii), each with its own pruning windows, failure modes, and council protections. Every quote we write factors in the species on site and the access route, not just the visible canopy.

- Larger machine for open hinterland blocks and acreage work
- Grind to 150–300mm below grade as standard, deeper on request

When you might need this
- → A previous removal left the stump in and it's heaving the paver path
- → Surface roots from an old fig are lifting the pool surround
- → Sucker regrowth from a coastal sheoak or eucalypt keeps coming back
- → You are returfing the lawn or laying new pavers across the patch
- → A slab, retaining wall or new shed footing has to go over the stump
- → Termite activity around the dead wood needs the food source gone

Stump Grinding FAQs
How far below ground does the grinder go?
Standard is 150–300mm below grade, which is plenty for new turf rolls, paver sand, or a shallow retaining course. For a new garden bed or a slab footing we can go deeper — just say what's going in over the top and I'll grind to suit.
What happens to the chips that come out of the grind?
Your call. Most Sunshine Coast customers leave them as a mulch pile on the spot or spread them through the closest garden bed — fresh grindings break down within a year in subtropical heat. If you would rather not see them, we load and haul them as a small extra line.
Can you grind a few stumps at once?
Yes, and per-stump pricing drops on a multi-stump job. Most of the cost is in getting the grinder onto the block, so once it's there each extra stump is cheaper. Two or three at the same address is normal for us.
